So I picked up a 3L yesterday and I have got to ask, what makes this mech so damn good? I run the standard:

xl295 3 x ml 2 x ssrm 2 - 2 tns ammo 3 DHS / Endo / ECM (197 Armor)

And it seems perform beyond it hardpoints and other assorted gadgetry. Im not interested in the obvious things like ECM, and the hardpoint allotment, these things make it an obvious choice. But I find that it does exceedingly well at scouting / harassing, even downright brawling.

No I am not that new to the game, I have seen many a 3L doing its thing in game, buts its entirely different to have one now and still not understand what makes it so good.

I was under the impression that they improved the code for the hitbox so im guessing thats not the issue either. Is it the speed / slim profile that makes full damage hits difficult, or maybe something else im missing.

Between my fast ecm mechs 2d, 3m, and the 3l, the Raven just feels different somehow. I dont think so much of it as the developers having done something wrong, but rather that they did something right perhaps.

lack of collisions
best hardpoint layout of light mechs
ECM
SSRM

In that order.

Combination of speed, ECM and punch makes the 3L what it is. Couple that with n00b's lack of accuracy makes for the most hated Mech in the game.

Personally, I don't mind squaring off against one. A lot of players skimp on the leg armour and it doesn't take long to leg one if you're a half decent shot. What I really hate, is squaring off against a group of Raven 3L's. Then you're basically screwed! :)

Because only the greatest MWO players use it. So good, they don't even have to aim. Their missiles just hit. So good, they don't even have to dodge incoming fire. Damage just washes over them, like water on a duck's ***. Truly they are the elite. :)

It's because ECM is OP. Yup. That's pretty much it. If you took it out, it would cease to shine over the 2X and 4X or Jenners. But the developers made ECM OP, then only put it in this 1 variant, so the others are simply trash. I'm still waiting for the day that ECM won't be an instant pick that's included in every build that's able to slot. But currently, ECM is slotted by every player in every build if able, simply because it's that good.

Before ECM, the Jenner was on top of the lightstack.

You forgot SSRMs. SSRM+ECM+Buggy Damage make Raven's the best light mech hands down. If Ravens didn't have ECM, Commandos would be the most powerful light mechs, as odd as that sounds.

Maybe someday we'll have a game where you can choose between Jenner for more weapons or a Raven for electronics and not be forced down 1 path due to bad game balance. But that game isn't here yet. Take 3L, end of story. 2X and 4X are just fodder for skill unlocks too.

Actually without ECM, Jenners with 4ML 2STR would become the top dog. ECM is also what gets to decide who can shoot and who can't when it comes to Streaks. If ECM wasn't here or wasn't OP, that wouldn't be the case.

It's the Streaks, pre-ECM I played my Jenner-D with 2 SSRM2s and it's performance was head and shoulders above the others. Putting out consistent damage without having to aim or even look at the target makes it much more powerful at skirmishing, even if SRM4s technically pack a larger punch.

The ECM just means it's the most powerful light who can reliably carry Streaks (COM-2D is lightly armoured but still lethal against other lights), if ECM was removed or given to all light mechs the whine would turn back to Jenners.

If you feel 'forced' to take something to counter something else, you're not good at this game, fullstop.

hardpoints are better on the jenner... that´s why the raven got ecm (apart from the fact that it´s canon^^) and jenny didn´t ... ( remember the pre-ecm QQ "If you give Jenner ECM it wil be just more OP than it is now!!!" ?)

Thats why if Commandos and Spiders were the only mechs that had ECM, Commandos would be top dog in the light world.

If there was no ECM, Raven 3L would be playable, unlike it's other variants, but Jenners would be back on top as they were right up to the day ECM came out.

Wait, did you strip a bunch of armor or something? How do you have 3ml, 2ssrm2 with 3 tons of ammo, 295xl, 3dhs, and ecm? Seems like you would be 2 tons over (if using FF and near max armor). Or are you not using the ecm (its not in your list but you say your 3 ecm mechs and include the 3L).

That'd be true if I owned a 3L... but I don't, so it's not.

Ummm... how else do you counter the effects of ECM?

3L is meh. It isn't great. It is the easybutton for most people but true warriors rock Jenners with jets when they go light. Well, that and Spiders. Spiders are nasty fun.

Communication, teamwork, focus fire, big guns, positioning, strategy, counter-ECM, PPCs.

Seriously, if I, an average player at best, can handle ECM without much problem then all you 'elite' players shouldn't be bitching.

The biggest problem with ECM is when matchmaker throws two teams with wildly unbalanced ECM equipped. 5 ECM vs none is a problem, yes. 1 or 2 on each side is perfect and usually makes for an awesome game.

Edit: I should mention that I Lone Wolf PUGs almost exclusively. Whenever there is a match with zero communication it's almost a guaranteed loss, regardless of ECM. If people are talking, ECM becomes much less of a problem.
